Alkanes with varying carbon chain lengths serve as core sources of industrial fuel: short-chain gaseous alkanes (such as methane and ethane) are used as fuel for industrial boilers and power generation; medium- to long-chain alkanes are processed into gasoline, kerosene, and diesel-primary energy sources for transportation and industrial heating-while certain specialized alkanes can also serve as aviation fuel.
Basic Petrochemical Feedstocks
Ethane is a key feedstock for steam cracking to produce ethylene, which in turn serves as a crucial starting point in the synthetic plastics value chain for products like polyethylene. Long-chain alkanes undergo catalytic cracking and reforming processes to yield olefins such as propylene and butene, which are used to synthesize bulk chemical products like synthetic rubber and fibers.
Industrial Solvents and Processing Aids
Straight-chain alkanes with carbon numbers ranging from 10 to 16-characterized by low residue and low corrosivity-serve as solvents in paint production to adjust coating leveling and drying rates. They are also utilized in the manufacture of eco-friendly detergents and in electronic dry-cleaning applications. Additionally, they function as processing aids in leather and rubber manufacturing, enhancing product flexibility and dimensional stability.
