Alkane feedstocks are a class of fundamental organic chemical raw materials, with core functions spanning sectors such as energy supply and industrial production:

Fuel Supply
Short-chain alkanes (methane, propane, butane) serve as fuels for residential use and vehicles, while medium- to long-chain alkanes are key components of motive fuels like gasoline and diesel; they release significant heat upon combustion, yielding products that are relatively clean and easy to manage.

Chemical Synthesis Feedstocks
Long-chain alkanes can be cracked to produce olefins such as ethylene and propylene-essential precursors for manufacturing plastics, synthetic rubber, and synthetic fibers-and can also undergo reactions like halogenation to produce chemical intermediates such as haloalkanes.

Solvents and Processing Aids
Alkanes such as pentane and hexane function as organic solvents in applications ranging from oil and fat extraction to the formulation of paints and inks and the cleaning of electronic components; they also serve as rubber softening agents to improve material processing performance.
