Energy and Fuel
Short-chain alkanes (methane, propane, butane) are primary components of residential fuel gas and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Medium- to long-chain alkanes-found in gasoline, kerosene, and diesel-serve as essential fuels for internal combustion engines and industrial boilers, representing one of humanity's most important energy sources.
Industrial Solvents
Alkanes with varying carbon chain lengths serve as specialized solvents: for example, hexane is used for vegetable oil extraction; heptane acts as a thinner for paints and inks; dry-cleaning fluids are used for textile cleaning; and petroleum ether serves as a versatile organic solvent across diverse industrial applications.
Basic Chemical Feedstocks
Long-chain alkanes undergo cracking to produce olefins such as ethylene and propylene, which are further synthesized into plastics, synthetic rubber, and synthetic fibers. Certain alkanes are also used to manufacture fine chemicals-such as chlorinated paraffins and long-chain dicarboxylic acids-serving sectors ranging from pharmaceuticals and cosmetics to electronics.
